Eskilstuna and Torshälla are situated between the two big lakes Mälaren and Hjälmaren. Eskilstunaån, the Eskilstuna River, runs through the two cities.
Eskilstunaån has many names, for example, Hyndevadsströmmen and Torshällaån. The river has always been an important trade route.
In the beginning of the 17th century king Karl IX constructed a canal and locks to make the river navigable.
This canal was later replaced by the Hjälmare Kanal, which today is used by all sorts of boats.
On the Eskilstuna River commercial boat traffic was stopped during the 1960s when several low bridges were constructed. The locks have now been restored and are today in use after nearly 40 years.
